Background

　glolab produces a variety of career support videos that can be used for high school students with foreign roots, their supporters, designs and implements the workshop programs which use these videos. From October to December 2021, we are holding monthly introductory sessions to make our videos widely known to supporters. The first session, titled “Tips for Career Preparation” was held in October. Many supporters attended from all over Japan.

At the beginning, Pham, glolab’s coordinator who has a certification of career consultant, introduced the background and reason glolab produce the movies and the “6 steps for Career Development” that can be useful for individuals career development. It is said that a person’s career development follows 6 steps as shown as below. 

As these six steps are repeated at milestones throughout life, it is thought that the breadth of knowledge and experience will broaden and the expertise will deepen with age. By providing career development programs and guidance to high school students with an awareness of these six steps, they will be able to acquire the necessary skills and attitudes to enable them to choose their own way of life.

Based on the above, we used a model case to explain how to use the movies from a supporter perspective.

In this program, we are hoping that high school students take time to deepen their self-understanding in the process of researching and presenting their own work of interest, and as a result, enhance their sense of self-affirmation and self-efficacy.

As an example of how to use the movie, we took a work (“Let’s look back at the environment in which we grew up”) that we envisioned high school students doing as part of their self-understanding. In order to conduct this work, the facilitator has to prepare in advance by watching the movie series “Starting Today!” episode 6 to understand how to proceed with the work and the key points.

*In ”From Today!” movie series, the main character, Anh (a high school student) from Vietnam, gets advice from the people around her. She will do  trial and error, and decides on her career path, and takes action.

“Information about going on to higher education” [Tuesday, November 23, 13:00-14:00]

Information regarding higher education after high school is diverse and complex. Therefore, it is important to know the basic information about higher education in Japan first. This is an important foundation for making an independent career choice. In this event, we will introduce videos of information on higher education and how to use them!

“Senpai’s Experience”[Sunday, December 12, 13:00-14:00]

Carlos Uemura, director of glolab, has created “Senpai (senpai)” story video for high school students as a reference when thinking about their career paths. He will be the speaker on the stage and talk about his thoughts on the creation of the movies and how to use it.
